Hats Off Again: Kentucky Derby 2013

The Kentucky Derby is officially a horse race and unofficially a celebration of fashion with an emphasis on outlandish and eye-catching hats of all shapes and sizes. Held annually in Louisville, Kentucky, the Kentucky Derby began in 1875. The Kentucky Derby takes place on the first Saturday in May following the Kentucky Derby Festival that lasts for two weeks and consists of a multitude of activities. This year, the festivities and fashion were as lavish as ever!

One cannot imagine the Kentucky Derby without also conjuring up images of exquisitely dressed women sipping mint juleps. One woman in particular stole the show this derby. Canadian fashion model and star of Oxygen’s “The Face”, Coco Rocha was dressed for her very first Kentucky Derby by famed designer, Zac Posen and completed her look with a fabulous hat designed by Philip Treacy that was adorned with a towering bundle of purple orchids.  Rocha who served as a derby fashion correspondent even offered several tips on her website, www.cocorocha.com for picking your very own derby outfit that included not matching your hat, dress and shoes unless you are a member of the British Royal Family, pick your hat first and the outfit second, keep black to an absolute minimum and “break out all the colors of the rainbow”, think young and finally, “go all out on this one” and stand out.

The 2013 Kentucky Derby highlighted several stand-out trends including hats (it is estimated that 90% of all women wear a hat to the derby), pink for breast cancer awareness, hot pink, pastels, polka dots and vintage. Both men and women were spotted sporting these hot trends.
